Cyclone Gridiron Club Scrimmage – Iowa State Head Coach Gene Chizik Wants it Loud

I had an outstanding time at the Cyclone Gridiron Club scrimmage last night.  Thank you to Coach Chizik and the entire staff for opening up the scrimmage to the Gridiron Club.  Also, thank you to Mike Lacey and everyone else with the CGC who made it possible.

Coach Chizik spoke to the club after the scrimmage last night and made it clear to everyone that the practice was closed.   So as much as I would like to give out details on the scrimmage I am going to respect his wishes.  I will tell you that this scrimmage alone is worth the $100 fee to join the club.  I would encourage everyone to sign up today – your donation goes directly to Iowa State football.

Without going in to specifics I will mention there were some surprise individuals running with the ones and a few interesting position changes.  One particular position change seemed to be working remarkably well.  The freshman class looks to be very talented and many already have Big 12 bodies.

The marketing staff asked Coach Chizik what he wants from our crowd, his response was he wants the stadium as loud as possible.  He wants our crowd of 50,000 to sound like 70,000.  How many Cyclone fans are up to the challenge?  I know I am.

Here is the report from Cyclones.com that gives a few details on the scrimmage.

Choose the new Iowa State Cyclones helmet – the Gene Chizik era

The Iowa State football team will be wearing new game-day uniforms and helmets starting in 2008. Several months ago the ISU athletic department asked for design concepts from anyone who had a vision of what the new look for Cyclone football should be. Earlier today they released the new uniform design and three finalists for the new helmet. The Athletics Department is asking for input from the fans via online voting, until Friday, August 31st.

Here are the three finalists (Click on the image below to go to cyclones.com to vote)

2008 ISU Football Helmet Finalists

I am really impressed with the new uniform concept and I can’t wait to see the new look on the field. Which helmet do I like? I think if you look at the name of the website you can probably guess, but here are my thoughts on the three designs.

Click on the helmet images to see each helmet with the new uniformsCyclones helmetCyclones – It reminds me too much of the script on the 1987-1994 helmet and I prefer a “new” look. The cursive writing doesn’t look tough enough to me. One of my complaints with the current logo on the helmet is that it is tough to read from a distance and on camera. I think this logo would cause the same problem.

I State helmet

I-State – I think the logo is cool and I like how the it covers the helmet, but I don’t think the name is catchy enough. I can’t think of anyone who refers to Iowa State as I State. I can already hear our opponents fans making fun of this helmet. On a positive note it would be a unique looking helmet when comparing it to other teams in the Big 12 Conference.

ISU helmetISUThe reason Brad and I named this website ISUISU.com is the famous I-S-U cheer. When Gene Chizik leads us to our first Big 12 football championship in the next couple years, ISU will be a household name just like LSU and USC. I also like the look of the ISU helmet with the new uniforms. The ISU helmet is my pick to be the future of Cyclone football.

What is your choice for the future helmet of Iowa State Cyclone football?

Fort Dodge Messenger Story on Cyclone Defensive End Kurtis Taylor

Kurtis TaylorKurtis Taylor is back from injury and is currently listed as the starter at strong side defensive end for the Cyclones.  Taylor missed the entire 2006 season with a knee injury, but he says the knee has been 100% since January  He made the most of his time out last year by hitting his studies hard, Kurtis earned his undergraduate degree in communications studies earlier this fall.

Defensive Coordinator Wayne Bolt has been impressed with Taylor and expects him to have a great year.  Taylor can’t wait for the season opener against Kent State. “You have to be hungry — whether it’s football or in life, you have to be hungry,” Taylor said. “You have to have goals and you have to strive for them. I like to attack my goals.

Omaha World Herald Predicts Rough Season for Cyclones

Todd Blythe

The Omaha World Herald is picking the Cyclones to finish dead last in the Big 12 this year.  The OWH refers to the offensive line as maybe the least experienced offensive line in Big 12 history and sites that only two defensive lineman weigh more than 265 pounds.

There is a good lead-in story about Bret Meyer and Todd Blythe’s relationship and their transition to the new coaching staff.  JJ Bass is singled out as the top newcomer.

Cyclone Running Back Depth Chart Projection

by Scott Fuller
ISUISU.com

Who will be Iowa State’s starting Running Back when the Cyclones take the field against Kent State on August 30th? My best guess is Alexander Robinson, but Jason Scales and JJ Bass should see plenty of action as well.

#23 Alexander Robinson (5-10, 181) – Redshirt Freshman

Alexander RobinsonRobinson was a high school phenom in Minneapolis where he rushed for 2340 yards and 31 TD as a senior. Coach McCarney compared his skill set and demeanor to Ellis Hobbs. I attended Mac’s farewell GDM Cyclone Club luncheon last year and he said “keep an eye on Alexander Robinson next year, he is going to be special”.

I had the opportunity to watch several practices last year and I came away very impressed with Robinson. The thing I liked most was his ability to get to the outside and turn the corner. After many years of running only between the tackles it will be refreshing to see a Cyclone RB get outside. I give Robinson the edge to be the starter because I think he adds another dimension to coach McFarland’s offense.

2007 Prediction: 145 carries, 798 yards, 6 TD

#6 Jason Scales (5-9, 212) – JuniorJason Scales

Jason Scales finally saw action last year after an injury plagued first two seasons. The former West Des Moines Valley stand out looked good at times before going down to injury again late in the year. His best game came against Kansas State rushing for 67 yards and a touchdown. Scales style of running is different then Robinson or Bass and he should work well as a compliment to the two quicker backs. I would expect to see Scales in short yardage and goal line situations and he should also be effective late in games to move the chains and run the clock.

2007 Prediction 100 carries, 412 yards, 6 TD

#3 JJ Bass (6-1, 206) – Junior

Jamicah “JJ” BassJJ Bass has been the most talked about Running Back this off season. He comes to Iowa State from El Camino CC where he rushed for 1200 yards and 13 TD. Bass was also effective as a receiver catching 20 balls for 2 more touchdowns. SuperPrep rated him as the #2 JUCO back in the 2007 class. I have only seen JJ on video, but he hits the hole hard and shows good hands out of the backfield. I suspect he will struggle a little with pass protection early, but should see increased playing time as the season goes on.

2007 Prediction: 95 carries, 475 yards, 4 TD

#15 Cameron Bell (6-1, 233) – Freshman

All reports indicate that the freshman has been very impressive early in camp. Bell is a big, bruising RB that could provide the Cyclones with a different look. My bet is that Cameron Bell will redshirt in 2007, but that could all change with an injury to one of the top three guys. If Scales goes down during the season don’t be surprised if Bell fills the short yardage role for the Clones.

2007 Prediction: Redshirt

#22 Jason Harris (5-11, 208) – Junior

Harris is a great athlete that is trying to find his best position on the field. He is a running back, turned defensive back, turned running back. Unfortunately, I think his best position may be safety and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him there again soon. His name isn’t popping up much on preseason reports. Is he buried on the depth chart? Is he dinged up? Has he moved back to safety? I am hoping the staff can find a way to utilize the speedy Harris this fall.

2007 Prediction: Switch to Safety

#39 Rickey Thompson (5-9, 200) – Junior

Article on Iowa State Commit Josh Jordan

Josh JordanJosh Jordan verbally committed to Iowa State earlier this summer.  Jordan is a QB for St. Amant high school in Louisiana.  St. Amant runs a spread offense similar to what the Cyclones will run under new offensive coordinator Robert McFarland.  Jordan threw for 1,349 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior.

If you want to learn more about this soon-to-be Cyclone, the Ascension Citizen recently had a nice write-up on Josh.
