Iowa State – Kent State Recap

Scott Fuller
ISUISU.com

I am glad it was Labor Day weekend, I needed the extra day to recover from the season opening loss.  With all of the build-up for the season it was definitely a let down.  The hangover is finally over and I realize the game wasn’t as bad as it seemed last Thursday.  Let’s take a look at what went right and what went wrong.

JJ Bass

Positives

JJ Bass – the one position that showed the most improvement from last season was running back.  Bass didn’t start Thursday, but he probably will this Saturday.  ISU had more long runs from the RB position in one game then they did all last season.  The fact that freshman Alexander Robinson started ahead of Bass has me feeling good about the future too.

Jesse Smith – Going into the season most people felt good about the outside linebackers, but were worried about who would start in the middle.  Jesse forced a fumble and had 12 tackles in his first start.

Kick Returners – Allen Bell and RJ Sumrall both looked good returning kicks.  Sumrall had a return of 41 yards and Bell returned 2 for 54 yards and just missed taking it to the house.

Mike Brandtner – The sophomore dropped three punts inside the 20 yard line and averaged 39 yards per punt.

Offensive Line (first half) – The Cyclones came out of the gates running the ball well.  JJ Bass had over 100 yards at halftime.  The line allowed only 1 sack and ISU averaged 4.1 yards per rush.

Atmosphere – The crowd of 47,313 showed up early and did their part.  After seeing Iowa play at Soldier Field it made me appreciate the great playing turf we have at Jack Trice Stadium.

Jon Banks 7.5 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 break-up and a QB hurry

Todd Blythe – The coaching staff tried to get him the ball.  He ended up with 5 catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.  He narrowly missed another touchdown coming down out-of-bounds in the endzone after catching a long toss from Meyer.  In the fourth quarter they took another shot downfield to Todd.  Unfortunately he was pushed and shoved all the way down the field and for some reason the ref couldn’t find his yellow flag.

Youth Movement – Phillip Bates and Cameron Bell both received playing time as true freshman.  It leads me to believe that Chizik feels both can help this year and he is confident he can bring in equal talent in the future.

Marquis Hamilton – 3 catches, 24 yards

James Smith – 7 tackles, forced fumble, interception

Iowa State Offensive Line

Negatives

Bret Meyer – It wasn’t just the two interceptions, he didn’t seem confident in the offense.  Even the passes he completed didn’t seem to have much on them.  I expect Bret to bounce back this weekend.  We have to remember that it was Bret and everyones first game in the new offense.

Offensive Line (2nd half) – The Cyclones rushed for only 25 yards in the second half and managed only 89 yards of total offense.

Field Goal Unit – I think the message boards have been a little rough on Shaggy.  He did miss two 44+ yard field goals, but those are hardly chip shots in college football.  Some have mentioned there was a bad snap/hold on the first attempt

Blown Coverages – I am not sure who is to blame, but there were 2 or 3 plays that the Cyclone defense blew coverage.  One of them was the 42 yard touchdown pass.

Defensive Line – The DL wore down in the second half despite the fact they rotated 8 to 10 players all game.  The Golden Flashes rushed 33 times for 116 yards after halftime.

Kick Coverage – ISU appeared to have the momentum going into the locker room at half time when Jack Williams broke a 57 yard kickoff return, setting up a Kent State field goal.

Bad Snap – Iowa State was driving for what would have been the first score of the game, when Brandon Johnson’ s snap flew over Bret Meyer’s head and Kent State recovered.

Zac Sandvig – Sandvig muffed both balls that were punted to him.  He did manage to recover on each occasion.

Wide Open Offense? – The Cyclones were supposed to showcase a high-powered wide open offense last Thursday, but what we saw resembled last years offense.  I still think a wide-open attack is in the plans, but we may have to wait a while to see it.

Iowa State – Kent State Prediction

Iowa State – Kent State (Strengths/Weaknesses/Keys to Victory)

Kent State’s strengths:

  1. QB Julian Edelman – dual threat quarterback, more dangerous as a rusher than a passer, averaged 230 yards/game in total offense in 2006
  2. Offensive Line – the Golden Flashes return four of five starters on the OL
  3. Linebackers – The starting linebacker unit (all juniors) return

Kent State’s weaknesses:

  1. Special teams – had one of the worst kicking and punting units in the nation in 2006
  2. Wide Receivers – young group of wideouts
  3. Defensive Line – lack depth and experience
  4. Secondary – Lost two stud defensive backs to graduation

Notes: Talented sophomore tailback Eugene Jarvis (800+ yards as a freshman) is not expected to play against Iowa State.

Keys to victory for Iowa State:

  1. Contain Julian Edelman – with Jarvis out of the game, Edelman is the lone playmaker for the Golden Flashes, ISU will shut down the running game and force Edelman to throw
  2. Winning the special teams battle – the Cyclones should have a huge advantage in this area returning P Mike Brandtner, K Bret Culbertson, DS Matt Purvis and KOS Josh Griebahn; has Kent State improved in an area that cost them dearly in 2006
  3. Exploit Kent State’s weaknesses on defense – I dare Jack Williams to cover Blythe 1-on-1, wear down the defensive line by pounding them with three running backs

The 2007 Iowa State Cyclones: How are they different?

Game day is finally here and I can not wait. I am “juiced up” and “cranked up” and “so stinking fired up” just like Coach Chizik. A new era begins at 7:00 PM tonight. How excited are Cyclone fans? Season tickets are at 37,000 and counting. How will the Gene Chizik era be different? Here is a preview:

How will the game day experience be different?

  1. ISU FansNew entrance: No blow up helmet, I hope to see the Cyclones march down the side of the Jacobson building
  2. New music: Jock Jams is gone and is replaced with ??? I am hoping a tornado siren and something electric
  3. The loudest stadium in the Big 12: It is up to us to make it happen, be prepared to stand and yell the whole game

How will things be different on the playing field? I expect a much more aggressive game plan in all three phases.

How will the offense be different?

  1. ISU OffenseImaginative play calling and a bigger play book – We may not see the same play the entire night
  2. More substitution – How many players will see action? 2-3 QB’s, 2-3 RB’s, 6-7 WR’s, 3-4 TE’s
  3. Wide open offense – Four and five WR sets, multiple formations and more motion
  4. Four new starters on the offensive line – The starters are smaller and more athletic, but lack experience
  5. Less Fullback – The new staff prefers a second tight end to a fullback
  6. Taking advantage of matchups – McFarland will find a way to get the ball to Blythe, one way or the other

New names to watch on offense: QB Austen Arnaud, QB Phillip Bates, RB Alexander Robinson, RB JJ Bass, TE Derrick Catlett, WR Marquis Hamilton, WR Wallace Franklin, RT Ben Lamaak, C Brandon Johnson, LTDoug Dedrick

How will the defense be different?

  1. Chris SingletonMore aggressive – Less bend don’t break, more attacking and blitzing
  2. Concentration on fundamentals – Better footwork, technique and tackling
  3. Defensive Line rotation – Expect 7 or 8 guys to play
  4. Press coverage – The fans will finally get what they want CB’s harassing WR’s, no ten yard cushion
  5. Physical and fast – the 2007 Cyclones are stronger and quicker

New names to watch on defense: MLB Jesse Smith, MLB Fred Garrin, SLB Michael Bibbs, DE Kurtis Taylor, DE Christopher Lyle, CB Allen Bell, CB Zac Sandvig, CB Devin McDowell, S James Smith

How will the special teams be different?

  1. Bret CulbertsonMore kickoff returns: Teams will be kicking off from the 30 this year = fewer touchbacks and more returns
  2. Punt returns: Former Valley RB Zac Sandvig should provide excitement
  3. Multiple kick returners: Several players could be tried at KR

New name to watch on special teams: PR Zac Sandvig

MSNBC Poll – Choose Chizik

There is a poll on MSNBC asking which new coach on a BCS team will have the greatest success.

Gene Chizik is currently on top with Nick Saban second and Steve Kragthorpe third.

I choose Chizik how about you?

2007 Iowa State Football – Shockers

The Cyclones have several players that are currently not listed or buried on the depth chart that may play huge roles in 2007. Here are some of my favorites.

1. QB Phillip Bates – Will the Cyclones redshirt the freshman or find creative ways to get him in the lineup this season? I Fred Garrinwouldn’t be surprised to see #8 inserted in the lineup at several positions. He has the speed and the shake which will remind some Clone fans of Seneca Wallace.
2. TE Patrick Neal – John’s little brother looks really comfortable at tight end. He runs smooth routes, has good hands and gets up field quickly.
3. LB Fred Garrin – Freddy will push Jesse Smith for playing time. Garrin has the physical tools but is trying to figure out the position. When everything sinks in look out for #43.
4. LB Cameron Bell – The coaching staff moved him for a reason. He looked very good as a RB, so they must think he has a better chance of seeing the field at LB. Has the size and speed to play the position, but he needs time to learn.
Milan Moses5. DL Bailey Johnson – Bailey impressed as a redshirt and he continues to impress this fall. He will be in the rotation on the DL and could be a dominant player when he adds more size and strength.
6. DE Chris Lyle – Lyle can put the heat on the quarterback. Time will tell if he can be a complete DE, but we should see him on passing downs.
7. WR Milan Moses – Moses wasn’t listed on the two deeps at WR, but Chizik mentioned he is searching for gamers at the press conference today. Milan is a gamer.

2007 Iowa State Football – Impact Players

If Iowa State is going to contend for the Big 12 North this year, new players will need to emerge as stars.  I think there are several players who have the ability to rise to the challenge.  Here are some impact players to watch out for in 2007.

1. CB Allen Bell – I love his size, his speed and attitude.  I think he will emerge as the top cornerback on the team and should make an impact on special teams as well.
2. RT Ben Lamaak – Lamaak has made the transition from TE to RT look easy.  He is easily the most athletic lineman on the team and should get better and better as the year goes on.
3. RB Alexander Robinson – I have a feeling about this guy.  He is elusive, will make you miss and has deceptive speed.  Could play a huge role in the passing game.
Kurtis Taylor4. DE Kurtis Taylor – Taylor was primed for a breakout year in 2006, but was injured in fall camp.  I bet he can’t wait for Thursday to get here.
5.  C Brandon Johnson – Started out on the OL, then moved to the DL, seems to have found his home back on the OL at center.  He took the job in the spring and has never looked back.
6. CB Zac Sandvig – Should be a star on special teams, especially as a punt returner.  He is ISU’s best nickel back, an important position in the pass happy Big 12.
7. RB JJ Bass – He is a cut back runner who hits the hole hard and catches the ball well out of the backfield.  ARob and Bass should be a great 1-2 punch.

Other Possible Impact Players: ATH Phillip Bates, TE Patrick Neal, LB Cameron Bell, DL Bailey Johnson, WR Wallace Franklin, CB Drenard Williams, LB Jesse Smith, FS James Smith

2007 Iowa State Football – Top Five Cyclones

Many “experts” are picking the Cyclones to finish near the bottom of the Big 12 North. I can see why the “experts” think ISU will struggle this year coming off of a 4-8 season with a brand new coaching staff coming in.

Why I am more optimistic? Iowa State is returning top players at the key positions on a football team. Who will be the top players for the 2007 Cyclones? Here is my best guess.

Alvin Bowen1. LB Alvin “Ace” Bowen – led college football with 155 tackles in 2006, leader of the defense, added ten pounds of muscle in offseason, high energy and hungry
2. WR Todd Blythe – 26 career touchdowns, coming off an injury plagued junior campaign, numbers should explode in 2007 with wide open passing attack
Bret Meyer3. QB Bret Meyer – captain of football team as sophomore and junior, all-time Cyclone leader in total yards and touchdown passes, will try to bounce back from a rough junior season
4. LB Jon Banks – moved from safety to LB in 2006, finished with 99 tackles, third most on team, has the speed coveted at the SAM position
5. NG Athyba Rubin – the strongest player on the Cyclones, moved from OL to NG in 2006, worked hard in the weight room to get his playing weight down to 320

Others with potential to crack the top 5:

6. CB Allen Bell – big, strong corner (6’2, 189) with size and speed to play press coverage
7. RB Alexander Robinson / JJ Bass – I have a feeling one of the RB’s is going to break out this year, Robinson is quick and elusive with good hands, Bass is fast and strong
Bret Culbertson8. DE Kurtis Taylor – Kurtis will see his first extended action after missing all of last season with a knee injury, physical and fast
9. K Bret Culbertson – Most accurate kicker in Iowa State history, will shoot in to top 5 with clutch kicks
10. KR/PR/CB Zac Sandvig – the freshman will be on the field alot, will be on most special teams units and is currently the top Cyclone nickelback

Cygarin’s Sports Ratings for Iowa State and Iowa – Preseason

Cygarin has posted the preseason ratings for Sagarin and Cosgrove.

Cygarin’s College Sports Ratings – Preseason Ratings

If you are a stats junkie you need to check out this site.  Using the rating systems Cygarin compares all Big 12 and Big 10 teams, gives odds for all Iowa State and Iowa games for the year,  predicts the wins and losses for the Cyclones and Hawkeyes and compares the strength of schedules for both conferences.

It changes from week to week based on the results of the games.  Which is good news for Iowa State, because the preseason ratings aren’t pretty.

Sagarin says:
ISU is the 11th best team in the Big 12 conference
ISU will finish with a 4-8 record
ISU is a 17 point favorite over the Golden Flashes on Thursday

Cosgrove says:
ISU is the worst team in the Big 12 conference
ISU will finish with a 1-11 record
ISU is a 7 point favorite over Kent State

Iowa State Offensive Depth Chart – Kent State

ISU released the depth chart for the Kent State game earlier today.

Cyclones.com – Depth Chart vs. Kent State

Offense Notes:

Coach Chizik said several positions are still up for grabs. It is anyones guess who will start at RB, my guess is still Robinson, but it sounds like all three will play. Arnaud is listed at #2 on the depth chart, but will Phillip Bates make it in the game first? I was thinking Patrick Neal might make the depth chart, but he is not listed. I was surprised to see Trey Baysinger on the depth chart, hopefully he can keep his redshirt.
