Cyclone Player of the Week (Week 10) CB Chris Singleton

A defensive player finally took home the honor of Cyclone Player of the Week.  CB Chris Singleton received the most votes from Cyclone fans after a two interception, six tackle performance against Kansas State.  Chris returned his first interception 21 yards for a touchdown to give the Cyclones a 28-10 lead in the third quarter.  Alvin Bowen deserves alot of credit on the play first deflecting the ball to Singleton, then delivering the key block on the return.  Singleton’s second interception with three minutes remaining sealed the victory for Iowa State.

Singleton was also named the Big 12 defensive player of the week on Tuesday.  The junior from Fort Myers, Florida is the first Cyclone to win that award this season.

Vote for the Iowa State Cyclones Player of the Game vs Kansas State

The Iowa State Cyclones got back in the winning column with a 31-20 victory over Kansas State. Josh Raven forced kick returner James Johnson to fumble on the opening kickoff and James Smith picked up the loose football. ISU’s offense capitalized seven plays later when Bret Meyer hooked up with Derrick Catlett on a 1 yard touchdown pass. The Cyclones never looked back.

Iowa State looked good in all three phases of the game. The special teams play which had been non-existent coming into the game, came through with big plays including the fumble on the opening kickoff return, Bret Culbertson’s clutch field goal and good punting from Michael Brandtner.

The Cyclone offense which had struggled to make big plays prior to last weeks game, is starting to find playmakers. On Saturday the big plays came in the passing game. Austen Arnaud found running back Alexander Robinson (35 yards) on a screen play and receiver Marquis Hamilton (25 yards) in his opening series at quarterback. Bret Meyer hit Todd Blythe on a beautiful out-and-up pattern for 40 yards in the second quarter. Arnaud helped put the game on ice in the fourth quarter with a 51 yard toss to Blythe, setting up Shaggy for a field goal. Robinson had 136 total yards in the game with 61 yards on the ground and 75 yards in receptions. The redshirt freshman running back also had two short touchdown runs.

The defense scored a touchdown for the second straight week. Alvin Bowen jumped a Josh Freeman pass late in third quarter, deflecting the ball to cornerback Chris Singleton who took the ball 21 yards for the score. Ahtyba (Tuba) Rubin came up big with 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, stuffing Josh Freeman on a quarterback sneak on fourth and goal from the one yard line. Singleton sealed the game with another interception late in the game. Bowen led the Cyclones with 11 tackles and DE Kurtis Taylor also had a nice game sacking Freeman twice.

Prediction: November Win for the Cyclones?

Iowa State will look to get back on the winning track this week with a home game against the Kansas State Wildcats.  The Cyclones have continued to improve throughout the season and I look for coach Chizik to pick up his first Big 12 win this weekend.

If the Cyclones are going to win, the offense and defense will need to overcome an inept special teams.  Kansas State has one of the top special teams units in the nation and appear to have a huge advantage.  It is time for the ISU coaches to take off the training wheels and allow our specialists to perform.

Saturday’s Stars:
QB Bret Meyer
WR Marquis Hamilton
CB Allen Bell

Prediction:
Iowa State Cyclones 28
Kansas State Wildcats 24

Clark, Artist, Bertolino Win Intrasquad Matches

11/1/2007 – Ames, IA

The Cyclone wrestling team held their pre-season wrestle-off challenges in front of a nice size crowd of roughly 600 people tonight at the Lied Recreation Center. Four of the ten starting spots were up for grabs due to the departures of the Paulson brothers, the ‘Beast from the East’ Kurt Backes, and Grant Turner. Five of the six starters from last year breezed through their duals, while David Zabriskie edged newcomer Kyle Simonson 8-4 for the final match of the evening.

Newcomers earning spots included Tyler Clark at 125 lbs., Jon Reader at 165 lbs., Mitch Artist at 174 lbs., and David Bertolino at the 197 lb. slot. Clark wrestled a hard-fought battle with senior Ben Hanisch from Waterloo and escaped with a 2-1 decision. Neither wrestler was able to score during the first period and Clark’s reversal in the second period proved to be the winner. This weight class will likely see competition all year for the starting spot which will also include Mark Kist, a three-time state champion from Eagle Grove. Clark is a Freshman from Davenport who finished runner-up in last year’s Iowa high school state tournament at 119 pounds.

Reader dominated his match winning 15-2. He flattened Andrew Sorenson almost immediately with a Fireman’s. Reader is a Redshirt Freshman from Davison, Michigan. He was a three-time Michigan state champion and won several other national tournaments including Greco-Roman and freestyle. Reader has been ranked very high in pre-season polls, and Iowa State must receive big points and wins from Reader this year in order to surpass last year’s success.

Artist, a Redshirt Freshman from Glenwood, earned a starting spot at another highly contested weight class by beating Chris Pursel from Effingham, Kansas. Artist used several cradles and tilts to seemingly score at will when riding and won 15-7. The wrestlers were fairly evenly matched on their feet, but Artist dominated on top. Pursel, a sophomore, and Freshman Todd Becker will surely continue to fight for this spot. Becker did not wrestle due to injury.

Bertolino saw some action last year at 174 pounds, but made the jump his Senior year to the 197 pound spot, and it’s paid dividends early. Bertolino defeated Sophomore Joe Curran 7-3. Bertolino is the only senior to earn a starting spot this year, but it wasn’t pretty. The match was 4-2 late due to two stalling penalty points awarded to Curran thoughout the final period. Bertonlino received both calls while riding parallel. He released Curran after the second call to make the score 4-3 giving Curran a chance to win with a takedown, but Bertonlino beat him to the punch late securing the win. This weight class will likely see competition all year between Bertolino, Curran, and Simonson.

Vote for the Iowa State Cyclones Player of the Game vs Missouri

Iowa State may have played its best game of the year in the loss to #13 Missouri.  A Cyclone team that has struggled to make big plays all year, finally made a couple against the Tigers.

Devin McDowell had the first big play on a 25 yard interception return for a TD.  It was the first defensive touchdown for ISU this season.

Alexander Robinson broke two runs of more than 30 yards.  The biggest play was a 37 yard touchdown run on 4th and 1.

Marquis Hamilton made a great play on a fade route in the end zone for his first touchdown as a Cyclone.

Bret Meyer had his best game of the year throwing for one touchdown and rushing for another.  Meyer completed nearly 70% of his passes against a tough Tiger defense.

Who is your choice for the Cyclone Player of the Week against Missouri?
