Cyclones Add Athleticism in 2008 Class

Iowa State athletics communication

Iowa State head coach Gene Chizik unveiled his 2008 class of national football signees Wednesday with optimism while recognizing the true quality of this group of incoming Cyclones won’t be accurately judged for three or four years.

“The main concern we had going into this recruiting year to upgrade the athleticism of our football team,” Chizik said.

“That means speed, getting guys that can make you miss with the ball in their hands, guys in the secondary that can cover you. It was a focus throughout the football team. I think we have addressed that in a lot of ways.”

The class was balanced by position. Defensive end Jake McDonough, a fi rst-team all-stater from West Des Moines (Iowa) High School joined with quarterback Jerome Tiller, who passed for nearly 1,600 yards and 12 TDs last season at Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio, Texas. Tiller rushed also rushed for 770 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior and was the member of Texas Top 100 by Rivals.com.

The class includes 22 high school seniors and one junior college transfer. The juco player is wide receiver Jason Carlson of North Dakota State College of Science. Carlson caught 46 passes for 747 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Another wide receiver add will be Rivals.com four-star recruit Sedrick Johnson of Arp (Texas) High School. Johnson had 41 reception for 633 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Two new Iowa State defensive backs are Leonard Johnson of Largo (Fla.) High School and Ter’ran Benton of Summit High School in Mansfield, Texas. Johnson played quarterback and defensive back for Largo. He passed for 911 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 958 yards and nine scores, leading Largo on a 13-game winning streak all the way to the Florida Class 5-A state semifi nals. Johnson also had 13 tackles and one interception. Benton showed great athleticism at Summitt, where he returned a fumble and a punt for a touchdown. Benton played both running back and cornerback.

Former Florida Rivals.com four-star high school tailback Bo Williams is part of the incoming class. He is already in school at Iowa State and will sit out the 2008 season after transferring from Florida. Williams, who hails from Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., chose Iowa State over 16 other schools as his new home.

It was the second recruiting class for Chizik and his staff at Iowa State, although his 2007 class was built while he still was hiring coaches a year ago.

“As the head coach you are involved in recruiting all the players, and I really enjoyed that,” Chizik said. “As an assistant coach you are concentrating on your specifi c student-athletes. It has been a lot of hard work but I have really loved meeting these men and bringing them into our football family.”

Spring football starts March 25. The Iowa State spring football game is April 19 at 1 p.m. in Jack Trice Stadium The Cyclones open the 2008 season Aug. 28 against South Dakota State.

ISU Basketball: Wanted for 2009…Guard Play

When will the Iowa State men make it back to the NCAA tournament?  It doesn’t look like it will happen in 2008 and I have my doubts about 2009.  The staff needs to upgrade the guard court in a hurry if the Cyclones want to make a run next year.

I feel bad for Greg McDermott, he will go through two Big 12 seasons with completely depleted back courts.  It appears things will be better next year.  Garrett will have a year under his belt and he has shown real promise.  Lucca will finally be free to play, unless the NCAA suits find some other unreasonable excuse for why he can’t.   SG Wes Eikmeier and PG Dominique Buckley will be on campus, but how much can they contribute as freshman.  Peterson, Haluska and Boozer all return as well.

So things are looking better at guard next year, but it may be 2010 before this team can compete with the big boys.  The Baylor game was a good snapshot of how far this team is from being a really good team.  The Bears have five guards on their roster that would start for the Cyclones.  It doesn’t matter how good your front court is when your guards are getting whipped.  Craig Brackins couldn’t miss all night and Iowa State still lost by 7 points.

The Cyclones will need to find someone who can replace Rahshon’s defense next season and they will need to find depth down low with Jiri graduating.  PF Clinton Mann may be ready for minutes next year, but Justin Hamilton appears to be a few years away from contributing.  Will the Cyclones sign anyone else in 2008?

Here is a projection on next year’s rotation:
PG Garrett / (Peterson/Buckley)
SG Staiger / (Haluska/Eikmeier)
SF W Johnson / Staiger
PF Thompson / (C Johnson/Mann)
C Brackins / Thompson

Iowa State To Retire Barry Stevens’ Jersey At Missouri Game

Courtesy: Cyclone Athletics

AMES, Iowa — Barry Stevens, an Iowa State men’s basketball All-Century Team member and one of the greatest basketball players in ISU history, will be honored at the Jan. 16 Iowa State-Missouri game. “Barry Stevens Day” will feature the unveiling of a banner of his retired jersey No. 35 as well as introductions of his wife (Sarita), sons (Darius and Jarius), sisters (Norma, Barbara, Rhonda and Beverly), brother (Donald) and brother-in-law (Jeff Grayer). Grayer is ISU’s all-time leading scorer, an All-Century team member and former teammate of Stevens at ISU. Stevens died suddenly from a heart attack on Feb. 21, 2007.Barry Stevens Shooting

Stevens’ jersey will be displayed in the Hilton Coliseum rafters. Stevens will also be featured on the program flipcard and in a video scoreboard tribute during the halftime ceremony.

“I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to play against Barry Stevens,” said Iowa State head coach Greg McDermott. “He is one of the main reasons you see the unbelievable crowd support we have today in Hilton Coliseum. He is one of the best ever to put on a Cyclone uniform and he is certainly worthy of this honor.”

Stevens’ uncanny long-range shooting and outstanding athletic ability was a perfect fit in Coach Johnny Orr’s up-tempo style that helped resurrect the ISU program in the 1980s. The smooth-shooting forward ended his career as ISU’s all-time leading scorer – he now ranks second – with 2,190 points. A two-time first-team all-Big Eight selection (1984, 1985), Stevens averaged 21.7 ppg as a senior to pace ISU to its first NCAA appearance since 1944. He has the school’s second-best single game scoring mark with 47 points.

It is only fitting that Stevens, a native of Flint, Mich., will be honored when the Missouri Tigers come to town. For many people, “Hilton Magic” began 25 years ago on Feb. 8, 1983. On that day, as a sophomore, Stevens led an upstart Cyclone team to a stunning 73-72 overtime upset over the 10th-ranked Tigers. Stevens tallied a then-career-high 40 points and hit the final and deciding shot at the buzzer on his patented jumper at the top of the key.

Stevens joins six other Cyclone greats who have had their jerseys retired: Waldo Wegner (#14), Gary Thompson (#20), Zaid Abdul-Aziz (#35), Jeff Hornacek (#14), Jeff Grayer (#44) and Fred Hoiberg (#32).

#1 Iowa State vs. #3 Iowa

It will be a ‘Battle for the Ages’, a ‘Clash of the Titans’, an ‘Instant Classic’, [insert your own cliche here].  Sunday’s meet has the potential to be one of the greatest dual meets in history, at least in these parts of the country.  Iowa visits Ames Sunday to battle the Cyclones who proved they are the top team in the country by beating former top dog Minnesota.  The hype is big with a sellout ‘half-crowd’ at Hilton Coliseum and in this series, anything can happen.

Iowa will be without returning national champion Mark Perry due to suspension, and Iowa’s loss should be Iowa State’s gain.  Iowa State Freshman Jon Reader was set to wrestle Perry, but instead will face Freshman Jake Kerr.  This change of events likely will translate into a six point swing favoring Iowa State in a meet where every point is critical.  Four matches are difficult to predict a winner including ISU’s Nick Gallick against Dan LeClere at 141 lbs., Iowa’s Brent Metcalf vs. Mitch Mueller at 149 lbs., Iowa’s Jay Borschel and Aron Scott at 174 lbs., and the heavyweight rematch between Matt Fields of Iowa and David Zabriskie of Iowa State.

 Meet Predictions

125 – Charlie Falck (UI) technical fall Mark Kist (ISU)

133 – Nick Fanthorpe (ISU) decision Joey Slaton (UI)

141 – Nick Gallick (ISU) decision Dan LeClere (UI)

149 – Brent Metcalf (UI) decision Mitch Mueller (ISU)

157 – Cyler Sanderson (ISU) maj. decision Ryan Morningstar (UI)

165 – Jon Reader (ISU) decision Jake Kerr (UI)

174 – Jay Borschel (UI) decision Aron Scott (ISU)

184 – Jake Varner (ISU) major decision Phil Keddy (UI)

194 – David Bertollino (ISU) decision Rick Loera (UI)

HWT – Matt Fields (UI) decision David Zabriskie (ISU)
